I woke with a bad headache early this morning. Took some meds, and couldn't get back to sleep. So we both got up, very early. Yeesh. So much for sleeping in on a weekend.
No Pilates for me this morning either; instead we were planning on finishing the spreading of the mulch, and then going to get groceries. But: yesterday we ended up buying a new-to-us sofa in lovely muted colors, and a white dining table with 6 chairs, from a delightful woman (who is selling her house and needing to get rid of the rental furniture that was in her home). We drove down to Edgewater to check it out and were only planning on purchasing the sofa; then she pointed out the table and chairs, and we succumbed. She gave them both to us for $120. We are very pleased.
I'm so relieved to get rid of that bulky sofa we did find last year--it has served its purpose very well as a temporary piece until we could afford something nicer. This one is definitely better quality, and not so huge, and it just makes me happy to see it. It fits better in our living room.
The new dining table is also thrilling--I never thought I'd buy a white table, but in this mostly white kitchen, it's a perfect fit. Plus, the chairs are so much more comfortable. What a difference some padding makes!
After the new stuff was in place we were able to drag the old sofa, and the kitchen table and 4 chairs, and another chair out to the curb for ... whoever wanted it. J even took a photo of it all and put it on craigslist this morning. Someone called 15 minutes later promising to be here within a hour. That was an hour and a half ago. Meanwhile we are sitting here waiting. Not sure we will wait much longer--if the stuff disappears before the buyer gets here, that's his loss. ( The guy never showed up, so the ad is back up.)
It's cooler outside this morning, and I want to get the outside stuff done before I start melting in the heat expected for later. Yesterday after getting home with the new furniture and removing the old, we jumped in the pool. Heaven. Water temp is at 79 degrees now.
This past week J went to his new PCP, who literally peeked under the splint and its wrapping, and said, yup, I'm going to refer you to the ortho! And we haven't heard a word since. When J called them again Friday, they said they were "working on it" . They also had said for him to leave the splint on until the ortho saw it, but by Wednesday J had told me "the hell with that!". He took it off. He is back to doing everything he was previously, and he stops sooner if he is hurting too much. Makes me crazy, yet I don't blame him--these processes don't move quickly at all. He doesn't think it's broken at this point. He just has to be careful how he turns his wrist.
This was the week he was supposed to get the cortisone injection in his wrist, but my Dr at work suggested he not do that until the ortho sees him, so J called and cancelled that.
So... he has been painting the front outside of the house all week. Just refreshing the white, but what a difference it makes. Two coats and it looks amazing. We also have brand new house numbers in a nickel finish, since the black plastic ones broke off as he was removing them to paint.
He also has been cleaning the pool 2-3 times a day. And today he is tackling the truck: its cab is a mess, and he has taken everything out, vacuumed, and washed the windows, then will store the loose items in a plastic bin, to keep accessible and neat and organized, but not rattling around.
Friday he drove down to get the take-and-bake pizzas from Papa Murphy's in Lake Mary, and then after getting groceries he finally stopped and rested. When I got home I quickly changed for yoga, and discovered on arrival that I was the only one there. This isn't the first time it's happened, so Sis has now ended the Friday night yoga due to lack of regular participation. I'll make an effort to do more of those yoga classes online instead. She might come here Wednesday evenings to do some yoga with me, and I hope so, but she has a pretty busy schedule. We'll see how it works.
Work went well this week: DrD was gone Thursday and Friday, and it was very peaceful without her. There's no doubt that work is much less stressful if she isn't there, despite the fact that we all work well, and there's no drama anymore. Our days just fly by, and it's almost non-stop; there is no down time really because there's so much to do. With a third person it will definitely be easier, even if they do find a PA to hire also.
I found out also that my co-worker's cat isn't pregnant after all so there won't be any kittens joining us. Probably just as well. That breed (Savannah) looks quite stunning, but they also might not have been a good fit here. I found a beautiful Maine coon available down in Orlando, and was very tempted... but I won't do that. We'll do just fine here with diva Fiona, and the two dogs. It's a full house as it is.
J had to take a friend on an errand a few hours ago, and while he was gone I decided to work on the spreading of the mulch. Well! Ha. That turns out to be a very labor intensive job, involving spreading a weed cloth over the area first, and cutting it around the existing plants, and then spreading the mulch. I thought it was going to be just a matter of opening the bag of mulch and then dumping it out and covering the ground. Not quite that simple. I only got about 10 feet done, before the work and heat got to me.
So then I figured I'd dig some holes for the aloe plants Sis rescued for us. Wherever I dig in our lawn it's not exactly hard ground, but it's very hard to cut through the existing root systems. So I found a shady area, with a lot of sand-type yard, and dug there. After about five feet I had to quit. Dragged some of the aloe plants there, and we'll see what happens. These aloe roots are entwined together, and they are old and very bulky and large plants. I cannot even lift these things. One more thing J will have to do....and fortunately he is happy to do so.
And finally, we went out to eat last night, at the Olive Garden. Neither of us has been to this chain in years and years. For a Saturday night it was pretty busy, yet the place was much larger than it looked from the outside, and there was hardly a wait at all. Great food, great service. We were only able to go there because I had a gift card from my employer. It's pretty spendy otherwise, but we both had a good time. Kind of felt like a little vacation.
Afterwards we drove out to Sis' house and fed the kitties while she and BIL were away, celebrating their 10year anniversary. We got home around 7:30, just as the roads were beginning to get crazy; it was so peaceful though, driving along the main street along the waterfront.
I'm going to get in the pool again, and then come back inside for some coloring time. I think we'll be cutting the cable this week, and I want to enjoy some of those channels while I can.
TYG.

Sunday
J picked up the parts for the additional AC venting this week. Then the repair man came to fix the stove, whose "cooktop on" light wasn't working. He was planning to tackle the AC vent job, in addition to collecting the last enclosure repair estimate.
Everything came to a screeching halt though Thursday morning very early: the cat was demanding food at around 5am, sitting next to me in bed. J sleepily reached over me and picked her up by the scruff of her neck. He was intending to lift her off and then carry her to the bathroom where we wouldn't hear her--but he felt a snap in his wrist, and instantly was in a lot of pain.
He refused to call the doc, instead trying to rest and ice it throughout the day. That night I asked if he wanted to go to Urgent Care, and again he refused. But the next morning, he was in so much pain that he was dizzy and nauseated. I was able to reach SIL, and she --thank God -- immediately came and took over, taking him to the ER since I had to go to work. He had an IV of valium and dilaudid, and yet continued with the nausea, poor guy, even after another anti-nausea med. The xrays didn't show a fracture, but the doc splinted him, and gave him narcotics for the pain. They told him not to remove the splint until he sees an ortho.
When I got home (I was able to leave work early) I called his own doc, and explained what was going on; he has an appt for tomorrow morning, an "ER follow up". They will evaluate and then do the referral to an ortho.
Exciting. Sigh.
Tuesday morning at work, my Dr's rx printer in his office had been replaced, but not hooked up to his computers, so we couldn't print any rx's all day. I can't tell you how frustrating that was. We had to tell the pts to come back the next day to pick up their prescriptions. If they'd come from a distance, we hand-wrote their rx's--which takes some time to document and copy.
At the same time, RN's computers and Dr's computers were repeatedly dying: we'd type something and in the middle of this it would just shut down. This happened over and over, to the point where we wanted to scream. So much extra work and time on each patient! Despite numerous calls to IT, and speaking to seven different people about this, nothing happened. Finally late in the day someone promised to get there by 8:30 Wednesday morning to hook up Dr's computer to the printer.
But--surprise-- no one showed up, and the problems continued. This time it was my laptop that was repeatedly shutting down, before I could save anything. The front office person finally called our own manager in utter frustration, and she contacted someone. By the end of the day his printer was hooked up at least.
And Thursday someone from IT came with an assistant and they went from the Dr's two computers to my two, to RN's two, fixing every single thing. It was a very long, long day.
Friday morning the other Dr's laptop began doing the same thing, shutting down in the midst of scribing, and also making her unable to print rx's. She however marched to her office and dialed IT, and shrieked. We all heard her demanding immediate action. And she got it.
It's been a tough week. I did get to the gym twice, and went to the shoe store to find two pairs of sandals for the summer.
Friday evening after J was finally out of the dilaudid fog, we were sitting and watching the news. My phone rang but since I didn't recognize the phone number I didn't answer. Later when I checked messages I learned it was my 9year old granddaughter, who apparently has her own phone now! She left me a message thanking me for the Easter card and cash, and then asking me to download an app called Marco Polo, which is a video chat app. I did so, and then tried to figure it out. I'm still learning it, but if it works I can call her and leave a message or even speak to her; she will both see and hear me speaking. Pretty cool. She has left me a message, but so far I cannot play it back.
Last night, Sis and BIL and the bonus daughter, and Bro and SIL all came to our house for pizza, salads, cake and cookies and champagne; Sis and SIL's birthdays are today and tomorrow. We had a double celebration. It was a lot of fun, and laughter, and talking.
A wonderful cloudy, and peaceful Sunday afternoon.

Sunday
We've had a very busy week, and very good too. J has done so much:
Digging and planting a total of four pygmy date palms in the front
yard; started working on spreading the cedar mulch along the chain link
fence, sanding down some beautiful old ironwork outdoor patio chairs a
neighbor gave us; another neighbor gave us a gorgeous huge
--something!-- which desperately needs re-potting. He also went to the
bank and started the home equity line of credit process. He took our old
lawnmower to a repair shop, and had it fixed; now we will sell it,
since BIL gave us his newer lawnmower. That should bring in some needed cash.
J in the front door. To the right of the front door is a gorgeous holly, a huge philodendron, and the red flowered bougainvillea. (That little bit of white building is our neighbor Louise's garage.)
This is the front porch, and the mysterious flower needing re-potting,which Louise gave us. She also gave me a begonia start which I have in the kitchen window. Note the "iron" railings, a project from a couple of weekends ago. Much nicer than the gray steel appearance.![]() |
J in the doorway. As he was planting the palms, an angry mockingbird was shrieking, because she has a nest in the bougainvillea.
The newly planted pygmy date palms, and the view looking east.
The old wrought iron chairs, pre- finish. He is sanding them down and painting them black, then replacing the cushions. These will then be placed to the right of the photo, on our front porch, where there is already a small iron table just waiting for them.
The beginning of the cedar mulching along the western side of the yard; the pool is to the right of this.
The second estimate for
But two other estimates will come in first.
Today is Easter. We don't normally do anything really, now that we don't have little kids. It's basically an excuse to get together with sibs and spouses, and eat yummy food which we all share in providing. I'm looking forward to that.
I did the yoga class Friday night but as I was lowering myself into the Caddy afterwards, I tweaked my right sciatic nerve. It's been very painful since, and is forcing me to slow down. It interfered with everything we needed to get done but we did manage it all, just by moving a lot more carefully.
Coincidentally J is also having a lot more pain in his wrists and thumbs. He is still waiting for that phone call from his Dr's office about the cortisone injections; he's been waiting a month. Hopefully they will help.
This first week at work without Coworker went just fine. Surprisingly well, actually. So much more peaceful! No worrying about whether she is going to show up, or whether she will be in a good mood or not. Such a relief.
The weather was cooler too, so a mixed blessing. Wonderful to be outside in, but not quite warm enough to swim in the pool! It looks just beautiful though... I'm excited to think the enclosure will be repaired.
Although the big center portion being open to the elements does bring a bit of surprise sometimes. Two weekends ago a small hummingbird hit the side of the patio door, and fell to the ground on the pool deck. BIL and I heard a small sound, and turned to see this beauty lying stunned. He carefully picked it up, and we all gasped at how delicate it was. He then set it on a table in the yard, and a few minutes later it flew up to a shrub nearby, where it sat for a few more minutes before zooming off.
Sometimes squirrels will race through on the pool deck, or over the top. And other birds fly right through the center; a couple have ended up inside the enclosure but not for long.
It is a wonderful life. TYG.

Sunday
Just got back from errands, and the ever present need for something at Home Depot. This time J was going to try installing an extension of the existing AC duct work in the kitchen, so that we have a vent at the warmest part of the whole house, which is of course where everyone sits. Unfortunately they didn't have those items. They recommended a specific store for him to contact for those parts.
Then we got two more bags of mulch, and more peat bark, and some privacy film for the front window. Then Walmart for some groceries, and finally returning that dress from last week.
Yesterday Sis and I went shopping for specific clothing items we both needed, and while out at the Mall, she took me to lunch at a great German place. We had a fun afternoon, and then went walking on the beach. I got home long after I'd expected, to find J had dug the holes for the palms, and had started dinner prep. My hips were aching after all the walking so it was nice to sit and be pampered. After the news we watched a couple of episodes of Outlander, and then hit the sheets.
Friday was the day RN and I -- along with everyone else-- learned that Coworker had accepted the float position after all, and wasn't coming back. She planned this and didn't say a word, leaving each day without a hint those had been her last days. I'm terribly relieved it's all over at last, and there will be no more drama from her to cause upset and frustration.
So we are short-staffed in two areas now. While they will hire a third person to help us with Clinic days of course, they've been searching for a third person for the Procedure room since last August. I'm a bit concerned over how long it will take to find a replacement. It means a lot more work for me and RN, but they will just have to decrease the number of patients we see until there is a third person. There's no way just the two of us can do all the work. And both RN and I are full aware that we--she and I-- cannot call in sick.
Our PA's last day was Thursday, but he called in "sick"! It was a day he was to work with DrD but since she is the reason he hastened his departure date none of us were really surprised when he called in. So he didn't get the goodbye card we had, or the bottle of Crown Royal. I will miss him, but again, there was always some drama with him, a lot of complaining about the doc. She really didn't like him, and was pretty harsh to him. I tried to stay out of it. So two major sources of Drama are gone.
I also learned this week that my granddaughter isn't coming for a visit this summer after all. Her mom texted me about some unexpected financial surprises which now prevent her vacation with us. I'm both disappointed and relieved over this, as it was going to be difficult to get those days off anyway. Not to mention, J and I were wondering what the heck we'd do with a 9year old for a few days. I love her dearly but I can wait another year for a visit, and maybe her mom can then come with her too.
J had a pool repair person come and look at the enclosure to see what it would cost to repair. We need the aluminum support structures, and almost all the screening re-done. The estimate came in at $4900. Ouch. He has two other pool companies coming this week, and so we'll decide what to do after these estimates are in. We might apply for a home equity loan. Or we might just put it on a credit card. J will go to the bank Monday to talk with them about options.
Our tax return was automatically deposited Thursday, and so we were able to give Sis almost all of it toward that debt. We still owe her some, but it will be paid off by May. That is a huge relief.
With some of my bonus money I got two new pairs of scrubs. Amazingly, although I ordered them online, they all fit perfectly. I'm so relieved. My spirits needed a lift, and new clothes or a new wallet, or new anything really help a lot.
It's a lovely breezy sunny afternoon. So happy to be here.

Sunday
Well. No refund due us from State of Oregon: when we actually sat down today and did the forms, it turns out we still owe them $82, on top of the $390 I already paid. For cryin' out loud. Sigh. Glad to be in FL where there is no state income tax.
Other than that it was a good week, if difficult. Monday and Tuesday RN was out at a required training. So it was just Coworker and me. Very tough, long days but they went well enough. Wednesday RN was back, but Coworker called in sick, as well as coming in Thursday but leaving at noon due to being ill, and same Friday, coming in at 9, and working until noon. Must be nice to be able to come and go. I am not exactly bitter, but it's definitely unfair.
Something funny happened too, and that was the high point of my day Thursday. I was in the room scribing for DrI, who was just about to test thisextremely anxious and non-stop verbal patient; he was bending down raising her pant leg so he could tap the hammer on her tendon. The pt rapidly changed her stream of consciousness speech to interject, "Oh! I forgot to shave my legs!" Without even looking up at her DrI said in a tired and slightly exasperated tone, "I don't care. NO one cares. That's not why we're here. "
The pt looked at me in shock. I was so surprised and caught off-guard that I started giggling, which set the pt laughing too, and even DrI finally chuckled. I've never heard him be anything less than excruciatingly polite and patient with a patient, so that will remain one of my favorite moments, ever.
Friday was payday, and Bonus day. My bonus was actually larger than my paycheck, which was a very nice surprise! I decided to skip yoga that evening because of my ongoing back pain thinking I'd give it a rest. Instead I went to a local department store and chose a dress I thought would do well for the wedding, along with a new handbag and two pairs of yoga pants.
After I got home and tried the dress on again I realized I will have to return it. It's a floor length dress, float-y and just beautiful, but I would need to buy high heel shoes to wear it, and that I can't do. Won't do. So that and the bag will go back. I have plenty of time to find a decent dress, but that money was just burning a hole in my pocket! I should have known better than to shop with abandon like that.
As I looked at the receipt for the time frame in which to return the dress, I realized the clerk had never charged me for that or for the handbag. Together these were $100, so I called the store and explained the situation. The person on the phone couldn't believe I was calling to let them know of the error, and kept thanking me for being so honest. She acted as if it was something unusual, which I think is sad. Even if I'd been tempted to just keep the items, my conscience would not have let me. Oh well.
J meanwhile spent the week working on building the base for the shed, and now that's done. He also ran a few more times to Home Depot or Lowe's --we go to both quite frequently--and picked up more pine bark to complete the small landscaping project out front. Bro gave us some left-over replacement pine bark from their landscaping project, and it was just what we needed--that nudge to do a small cosmetic fixer made a big difference. It looks wonderful out front. J did some trimming and pruning too, scratching himself on the gigantic bougainvillea of course--impossible not to.
We also bought the kickplates for the remaining two doors, which he will install tomorrow. BIL gave us his old gas mower so the one we have now (which doesn't work) will go to a lawn repair/trade-in person for some cash. And finally J will dig holes for and plant the two small pygmy date palms we chose to go in the front yard.
We have such a long to-do list, a project list. Most of this is stuff I cannot do, so we'd have to hire someone if J didn't know how to do them. Thankfully he is perfectly willing to tackle almost anything.
My daughter passed her math class, which was the only thing holding her up from actually receiving her diploma from the UofO. She is so proud of herself, and I am too. This was the third time she tried for that math credit, after having failed the first two times. It must have been so frustrating for her, but she hung in there. A college graduate--very impressive!
This week I also got in the pool for the first time this year; today looks to be another very hot day, up to 85 degrees. I'll jump in today, too. The pool temp is 72 degrees, so it feels a bit...brisk...easing in, but once you're in it's just heaven.
Later today we are meeting Sis and BIL at a place on the Intercoastal for "drinks and munchies". I've never been there, but they took J there when he was here looking for a house. Looks like a fun place, casual. It's slightly windy today thankfully, so it should be very nice.
TYG.

TYG.
