Tuesday

Posting this late because of traveling. Sis and I went to Vermont last week. It was a wonderful visit, and emotional. Seeing my dad is always a good thing, because I don't get to see him enough. But sad too, because this was in all probability the last time I will see my stepmom.  She has very advanced Alzheimer's, and will be moving to a facility very soon.

Sadly, she no longer recognizes  us. She was delightful, and tried to laugh when we laughed, and could sometimes respond very briefly when we would say something to her, or ask if she wanted something to eat or drink. But there was no having a conversation, or going anywhere.

We each got time to walk with Dad outside in the snow and cold.  We also tried to interact with the dog in a neutral environment. Because if we were inside, the dog was extremely protective, and tried to nip, or even attack, whoever he thought was threatening Stepmom...that was not fun. It was completely random, and unexpected. The dog is now on doggie Prozac to help counter this attitude; he has also made threatening motions toward Evelyn, the caregiver. He is clearly a loyal and loving animal, but he didn't take to me or Sis. Not this visit.

We got a lot of talking in, discussing plans and ideas for the future. Sis and I did some cooking for Dad and froze some meals; Sis did all the meal prep for breakfasts and snacks and left them happy. We watched the news in the late afternoons, and listened to music, and read, and watched movies. On one of our shopping trips I saw a mink running along a frozen stream bank! We watched the birds, and just shared time with Stepmom and Dad...it was a good time.

It was a quick trip; my sister and I arrived around midnight Wednesday, and had Thursday, Friday, Saturday there, and then left at 1pm Sunday to catch our flight back.

After our very late arrival home Sunday night, yesterday I was like a zombie at work--not enough sleep!  But I fell into bed early last night and am feeling much better today.

Last week at work was wild: Monday we lost electricity for some reason. Our whole building was dead--no lights, no computers, no phones, no AC, no nothing. For about 90 minutes we  just sat, and waited. We could do no work at all. Eventually everything came back on.

Tuesday morning was also crazy-- as far as weather goes. We had a tornado warning.  There was  a  lot of wild and crazy wind, and huge dark clouds.  The tornado warning came over the radio about every 30 minutes throughout the day, and some people cancelled their appointments since they didn't want to be on the roads. Later I'd been planning to go to the gym, but got scared off by the dark clouds, and decided to go directly home instead. Sis got actual hail where she lives, but we just got a lot of rain and wind. I'm thankful for that!

J really missed me, and so did the puppies. They have hardly left my side since I've been back. J fixed my antique desk while I was gone, and it looks amazing. He has also been working on a better entrance to the yard, from the pool enclosure. It will look a lot nicer when he is finished.

I'm beat...will catch up this weekend.

Sunday

Lots of Stuff happened this week. For me the big shocker was Friday afternoon.

Around 15 minutes before we were going to leave, DrLady came to stand before my desk and said, "Girls, I need to tell you something."  RN, me,  and the one front desk person working dropped everything and moved closer.

"The PA isn't coming back. He had a meeting with the CMO early this afternoon, and he...won't be back. So don't expect him Monday morning. Ok?"

Just like that. We were utterly shocked. We knew she had been displeased with him, and how "slow" he was to pick up on the massive amount of learning there was, but good LORD: we both thought she was the one being unfair to him, to expect him to learn this any quicker. He had only been there 8 weeks. We liked him a lot, and had fun, and I for one probably enjoyed him the most. Somehow we just clicked. I am really, really going to miss him.

Later after I got home, I texted him and expressed how shocked I was, and how sorry I was that we hadn't gotten to say good bye, etc. He called me back right away, and we talked for about 15 minutes. I heard a completely different story from him, not surprisingly.

(DrLady had told us she thought he was cheating on certain things, and that he had a tremor, which wouldn't allow him to do injections. RN and I didn't see that at all--we saw that he was nervous as hell around her and that his hands shook at first, but he wasn't like that when he was doing exams with my doc. Hmm.)

He told me he had called for the meeting with the CMO and the second in command, and that it was to give them his honest opinion of working with DrLady, that it wasn't worth it, that his mental health was suffering, that he was dreading coming to work every day, that she was rude and disrespectful to him ( that part is all true, as we can certainly attest). He gave them several examples. Much to my surprise they were completely aware of this side of her, and sadly have heard this type of complaint before regarding her difficult personality. Sigh.  They talked with him quite a while, and finally did agree to let him out of his contract.

So he isn't worried at all about what will happen next; he said, "I always land on my feet, don't worry about me!" He had called my doc after the meeting with the CMO, and told him what happened, but didn't call DrLady, figuring she wouldn't respond politely. Oddly, DrLady seemed hurt and surprised that he hadn't called and spoken to her also.  Weird. She is clueless about so much. PA's take on her is that she is very insecure, which is why she was so nasty to him.

PA had been working with me and my doc that day, and so after lunch I brought the first pt back, got the vitals etc, and went to tell PA about him so he could see the pt. PA finally stopped me and said "Dr will be seeing this pt, because I have a meeting at the home office..."  I said "Oh! Ok, you should have told me!"  He smiled and said, "I just wanted to hear your sweet voice."  I laughed at him, and left to go find my doc, and that the last time I saw him.

Well, that was the bombshell.  Friday morning, we were all working together as usual, running around like crazy; at one point  the guard came by with our paychecks as usual; he also had our bonuses!  My bonus was twice the size of my paycheck! That was very nice.

This coming week my doc is gone on vacation. It is his culture's New Year, so his one daughter is coming home for a visit, which she hasn't done for a while. Sadly, he lost his only other brother this week due to a freak accident in India;  the older brother slipped and fell, hitting his head; he began bleeding right away, and because there was no MRI machine in the hospital in the town where they live, they were unable to determine the source of the bleed in time to figure out the correct treatment.  My Dr was contacted but due to the time difference and the lack of resources they were unable to save him. He was on Pradaxa.

This is what scares me. J is on that medication, too. He has fallen a few times, and has learned of course how to fall correctly, safely--- but accidents will happen. We live in a house with a lot of tile, a lot of concrete. If he fell during the day and no one knew...

Monday morning, J took BIL to the airport. BIL is now in Karachi for an entire month, on a job for his company.

Tuesday Bro and SIL left town to drive back up to CT. Happily they left some beautiful plants which were gifted to us: a bouganvillia, and something pretty which she said was a pink impatience, and a type of  grass for a border or edging. J drove over and picked those up. So happy to have those.

Wednesday J and I did the gym after work. Then Sis was going to join us, but the traffic this week has been insane due to Bike Week, and so we rescheduled for Friday.  J meanwhile tackled the two giant bags of shredding we have been collecting. It was cold enough outside that staying inside made more sense. So this was a good job to do. We had fires in the fireplace almost every morning.

This week I learned a childhood friend, someone I have known since we were four years old in Nursery school, had died.  We had been to each other's houses for birthday parties, and had classes together.  We lost touch a couple of years ago, but when I visited my hometown paper on line, there was his obituary. What a shock.  It really threw me. Apparently he had been dealing with some long term illness. No idea what kind, as there were no details. So sad.

Friday night Sis came for dinner. She's dealing with a lot: missing her husband, a lot of work stress, an illness in a kitty. And so it was nice to just sit on a Friday out by the pool and catch up. Bike week is almost over, which means traffic will be much less, very soon.

Saturday morning I had my meeting, then J and went and had our taxes done. It's such a long process that we are seriously thinking maybe we could learn to do this ourselves! How hard can it be?  We finally had all the correct paper work collected, but it took the preparer just 30 minutes. Then we waited another hour for it all to be double checked by another preparer. All together it was two hours. Granted, it's free, but jeez, it's a long two hours.

MissS thinks she might be ready to move out by June. That is only 3 more months! We are keeping our fingers crossed that it works out, that she can find something she can afford, and is close by.

Tomorrow it will be exactly two years since we moved here. We arrived on March 19, 2016. It was such a hot day, I remember. We were just stunned at this place.  I remember telling J back then that if he really hated FL that we could go back to OR, but we needed to just give it two years, first, a two year trial. So, Friday I asked him what he thought.

And he said, even if we could go back, he wouldn't. He likes it here. It's warm, and we both need the warmth. Neither of us can deal with the cold anymore on a year round basis. Does it feel like "home"? Good question. What is Home? Home is where your loved ones are. That definition fits--we are Home.

It's beautiful here. The bird life is amazing. The house is large and comfortable. We have a good life. We have a gorgeous pool, and our family is close. The beach is nearby, the ocean is just a short 15 minute drive.  Boating will happen, fishing will happen-- J can actually do that anytime, really. He doesn't even need a permit.

There is so much to see around here. I love learning about our adopted state. Not crazy about the politics, but then the whole political climate everywhere changed drastically after we moved here--that would be insane no matter where we were.

I'm very relieved that J is happy here, and I know a lot of that is because we are so happy here together. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me, no doubt. That makes everything worthwhile. I am blessed.

Sunday

Sunday night, already. It's been a very quick weekend as usual. But always wonderful. Last week went by fairly quickly too.

I forgot my phone at home Monday morning, so J brought it to me at work on the way to his own doctor appt --the cardiologist. His doc agreed to keep him just on his Pradaxa and the usual BP meds, and if the AF doesn't settle down, then they might do an ablation. Gulp.

J also finally fixed my rocking chair that day, so we re-arranged the living room once again so I can actually use that chair now. It's lovely to sit in it...it gives me support on the neck.

Sis came for dinner Tuesday night which is always enjoyable. She got the news that BIL goes to his out of the country job Monday, ( tomorrow). One of those things you are prepared for, but still, once you know the actual date its suddenly more real. Sigh.

Tuesday was one of the few nights I didn't get out on time; in fact Coworker and I were there  until almost 5. Normally Tuesdays and Thursdays  J and I do the gym after work, but this week we went on Wednesday and Friday instead.

J bought some gardening mulch to redo the stuff which has blown away or worn away over the past year, and re-did the areas in the back yard which needed it. This week he'll do the front yard.

The week at work was kind of a blur--most days were pretty tough; for some reason every single day seemed more intensely busy and hard. Either we had difficult patients which were more involved than usual, or there were more phone calls/tasks connected with them. I never would have thought that finding a replacement for  that other co-worker would have taken this long: she has been gone 11 months now, and we are still searching. There is a serious lack of appropriate candidates for this position which I do not understand.

Yesterday I went to my meeting in the morning, dodging bikers all the way. Bike week started here in earnest on Friday, and will continue for another week or so. The noise is incredible. Combine that with Spring Break, both locally and for college kids coming here, and there is a lot of  extra traffic.

Bro and SIL, and Sis and BIL, and BIL's daughter all came for dinner last night. A good time--first time we all have seen each other since NYE. Good to catch up--we all have a lot going on. Sis wasn't feeling well and they left earlier so she could go get some rest.   Bro and SIL stayed later.  SIL  brought us some lovely pewter pieces she no longer has room for, and a couple of Christmas pieces which went with the other stuff she gave me.

Bro reminded me that the wooden furniture I have (which is holding my stereo equipment, and receiver, and the CDs and VHS tapes) both originally came from our (his and my) old landlord in Boston, Lenny. Wow, does that bring back memories. I'm not going to say I'd almost forgotten about him, but he has been a recurring theme in my life. First in Boston, and then when I lived in San Diego--he found me there to return my deposit, and showed some interest in getting to know me better. The timing was all wrong though, and he was living in Boston and I was living in SD. Yeah, so that didn't work. Anyway, I never saw him again, but always wondered whatever happened to him. Interesting where your mind goes.

This morning I woke up fairly early, around 4am, instantly remembering it was actually now around 5am. Ugh. I stayed in bed dozing, hoping I could actually sleep more.  But we did get up around 7. We re-set all the clocks, and were relieved to feel it was much warmer this morning than yesterday morning.

This morning MissS and I went to Pilates, where we and Sis and BIL were the only attendees. So it was a nice small family group, with personalized attention and refining techniques. By the time we got out, the bikers were out and about, so we scurried home.

Later J and I drove over to Bro and SIL's to pick up some plywood Bro was getting rid of. It's so beautiful where he lives. So windy, and sunny.

Back at home we did some chores and then watched a very good movie called  Jungle, based on a true story, which if done well are some of my favorite movies.  "Jungle, the new film from Australian director Greg McLean, has a hell of a tale to draw from. Former Israeli soldier Yossi Ghinsberg and two friends followed a guide into the Bolivian jungle in November 1981, only to have the group fracture; separated from the others, Ghinsberg stumbled into a harrowing ordeal of one man against the unforgiving environment. Jungle is based on Ghinsberg’s autobiography"....etc.  Daniel Radcliffe plays Yossi. I thought that might be a bit of a stretch at first, but he's a better actor than I gave him credit for.  A movie my dad might enjoy.

J will take BIL to the airport tomorrow, and then we will be keeping him in our prayers. It will be a long 4 weeks.

Sunday

Wonderful weekend. Much cooler weather--only 62 degrees today,  sunny and windy.

Yesterday was the same, and after my meeting I met Sis at her house. We went walking on the beach, two miles . Holy cow, it was --well, it sounds crazy to say "cold", but it felt cold and windy enough that we were leaning into the wind as we were walking. Talking and walking was breath-taking, literally.  There was no one actually in the water.

After that I went home, and J and I tackled the kitchen cabinets. We are experiencing a bad roach issue, so we emptied all the cupboards, wiped down walls and shelves inside with bleach. Then replaced everything and placed roach traps in strategic locations. All the chemical smells had me feeling ill and dizzy, so MissS took over that job for me, helping J to finish and organize,  and I went outside to breathe some fresh air. While I was out there I did some raking.

Today MissS and I did the Pilates class, and after that J, she and I drove to BestBuy. The closed captioning on our 11year old TV died last weekend. This has made for a very tough week: J just cannot hear the TV at a bearable level without it...so it's either incredibly loud (making it very uncomfortable for me and MissS) or he uses the headphones... and that way we can't hear a thing.

So yesterday, I suddenly remembered I am getting a bonus later this month!  We decided to put it toward a new TV (a little ahead of time), and did some research.  And this morning after Pilates we all went to Best Buy and found a new TV...and between J and MissS  they had it up and running in about 90 minutes. One remote manages it all: the antenna TV, the Amazon Firestick and Prime, Netflix, and a lot more we haven't explored yet, plus a beautiful picture on this set.

I didn't think we needed a new TV--and if the closed captioning hadn't died, we would have gotten along very well without it. But now that I see what a few hundred dollars can buy these days, the difference is absolutely mind-blowing. Thank God for bonuses!

My son N went to Hawaii this week with his gf Amber and their child Crimson, funded by her dad who lives there. He has sent some beautiful photos. I'm trying not to worry about what kind of impression he is making, and instead just enjoying the wonderful time he seems to be having. This is the first time he has met the girl's father, I think.

Good week at work. The new PA is starting to settle in better. DrLady is still being very rough with him, with very high expectations considering how short a time he has actually been with us. But he seems to be handling that well. The days he works with me and my doc are a lot more relaxed and we have a lot of fun.

J and I did the gym after my work on Tuesday and Thursday again this week, and while those workouts are good for both of us, they are exhausting! I usually sleep pretty well on those nights.

We had dinner at Sis' tonight, and got to soak in the hot tub for an hour or so. On a cold day like today that really was a blessing. I think we'll sleep well tonight too.
